On Wednesday July 22, critically-acclaimed musical Songs For A New World is coming to St James' Theatre in Westminster for three weeks only.

The play stars a multi award-winning cast, including Cynthia Erivo, Damian Humbley, Dean John-Wilson and Jenna Russell. The production is directed by Adam Lenson.

Ahead of the production, getwestlondon caught up with West End performer Dean-John Wilson.

Before his role in Songs For A New World, Wilson has starred in Olivier-nominated production Here Lies Love, From Here To Eternity, Bare, and Sister Act: The Musical.

Wilson said: "Songs for a New World is what every aspiring actor looks to perform. Every song goes through a different journey. It's Adam's job to do it a bit different, more musical-style, which has never been done before. We want the audience to think: 'I came away having learnt something'.

"It's about hope and opportunity, there's a different approach to every song, and a journey through the piece. It's never been done like this before."

Dean-John Wilson will be performing in this production of Songs For A New World

The play is a vibrant, thrilling and moving journey through the life-changing moments that define us. The unforgettable songs weave characters, locations and time periods together in one epic production, from the deck of a Spanish sailing ship to the window-ledge of a New York penthouse

Wilson said: "The songs that I've got are a bit melancholic. It's a bit hard for me, I'll have to draw from personal experience.

"Nobody's done it like this before, so it will be exciting for people to watch... It's the 20th anniversary, the cast are amazing, it's an epic piece.

"The hardest thing is connecting with the emotional content, tapping into the emotional journey... Parts are quite dark, but there are feel-good moments."

The play is running on its 20th anniversary since its first production Off-Broadway, and will see the cast performing with a five-piece band for an unforgettable evening.

Wilson said: "We start rehearsals on June 28, open on July 22 and we run for three weeks until August 9. It's a small venue of about 400 seats, but ticket sales have gone through the roof!"

Writer Jason Robert Brown said: "It's about one moment. It's about hitting the wall and having to make a choice, or take a stand, or turn around and go back."

Act fast if you want the chance to see this epic musical for a fun-filled evening! Tickets cost from £15.
