BEAUTY and the Beast is a classic tale that is loved and revisited by millions every year. Whether it is by watching the globally successful Disney film version or reading the many adaptations of it, there is no doubt that most people have comes across this magical fable.

This January, The Chameleons Amateur Dramatic Society, established in 1966 in Neasden, is putting on a fantastic pantomime of this beloved story.

Taking inspiration from the earliest published version, written in French by Madame Gabrielle-Suzanne Barbot de Villeneuve in 1740 and titled La

Belle et La Bette, the pantomime tells the story of a broken merchant, father to three girls, who sets off on a journey to reclaim riches from the wreckage of his lost trading boat.

On his departure the merchant's two elder daughters request dresses and jewellery, whilst Belle simply asks for a red rose.

Returning unsuccessfully from his quest, the merchant loses his way and finds shelter at the castle of the Beast. Here he is accused of stealing a rose from the garden and is imprisoned.

Belle agrees with the Beast to swap places with her father, saving him, and the romantic story of magic, love and loyalty takes off.

The Chameleons Amateur Dramatic Society welcome back one of their founder members, James Snell, as director while Charlie Wakely is musical director.

With a cast of 35, including 19 children aged from eight to 15, a 30-strong backstage team, and a brand new script written by Robert Spolander (production manager) and Stuart Everett (who plays the Beast), this pantomime promises to be an exciting adaptation that invites its audience into a world of intrigue and fantasy.

Fused with song, dance, new characters and buckets of energy, The Chameleons' colourful production offers a delightful evening's entertainment for the entire family.
