Budget retailer Poundland has launched a new chocolate bar to rival Toblerone .

Unlike its branded counterpart, Twin Peaks has two triangles instead of one and weighs in at 180g - 20% heavier than Toblerone.

Made by Birmingham chocolate factory Walkers Chocolates it is said to have a distinctive British flavour compared to more traditional milk nougat bars from Switzerland.

A sneak peek of the Twin Peaks chocolate bar can be seen on a documentary about the budget retailer - Trouble in Poundland - on ITV on Tuesday (June 20) at 9pm .

Poundland said Twin Peaks had already received rave reviews in secret blind taste tests where two in three customers preferred it to the branded alternative.

Development on Twin Peaks began earlier this year after the makers of Toblerone - Cadbury owners Mondelēz International - created uproar by reducing the weight of the bar by 20g and changing the shape of its iconic brand.

Twin Peaks will be available in Poundland stores from the first week of July

And the price of this new chocolate bar? It will sell in Poundland stores for £1 from the first week of July.

Standard 150g Toblerone bars are currently priced from £1 to £1.50 in supermarkets.

The classic, delicious Toblerone

Poundland trading director Barry Williams said: "Poundland shoppers are savvy and the change in their favourite chocolate bar last Christmas didn’t go unnoticed.

"That’s why we’ve created a new £1 alternative for them - the size they wanted, with a British taste, and with all the spaces in the right places."

The new chocolate bar is said to be inspired by the double hill on the top of the Wrekin in Shropshire.
