Spring has sprung and the Moomins have come out of their winter hibernation, making Kew Gardens their home for the next few weeks.

Moomin Adventures opened at the 300 acre gardens in Richmond over the weekend, offering a range of activities and fun for families until April 17.

The spring festival features Moomin characters from the popular Scandinavian tales, being brought to life through activities such as an interactive trail touring through the gardens, a magical tea party and a Moomin Festival Camp.

Nestled in the heart of the conservation area, the camp is hosting an array of activities for children to enjoy including craft, a puppet show and an opportunity to meet the Moomins themselves.

Visitor programme's coordinator, Katie Weaver, told getwestlondon: "I think Moomins are a lovely, traditional, old fashioned feel that love nature and having the ethics that we have here at Kew, are a natural fit."

She said Kew Gardens has used the landscape in order to create the Moomin world, adding: "What we want to do is to encourage families to go back to nature, to enjoy past times that Moomins would enjoy, which would be things like den building, it would be some simple craft activities like learning how to plant their own seeds, but also enjoying the landscape and things we have to offer here at Kew."

Entry to the festival is included in a standard Kew Gardens admission ticket

Upon arrival at the gardens, children will be given their very own Moomin newspaper which will take them on an interactive trail through the gardens, on a search to find the missing plants from botany-obsessed Hemulen's prized herbarium collection.

Children and adults alike can enjoy spring flowers ranging from tulips to fritillaries and daffodils along the trail.

After completing the newspaper, the trail will come to an end at the Moomin Festival Camp, where children will be rewarded with an Easter egg trail, craft activities, a magical tea party, puppet show and a chance to say hello to a real-life Moomin character.

After working up an appetite, there will be plenty of treats on hand in the camp, including the Moomins' favourite pancakes and picnics are also welcome.

Moomin Adventures can be enjoyed as part of a standard Kew Gardens entry, costing £15 for adults and £3.50 for children.
