London has arguably the best music scene around, with thousands of talented musicians emerging every day, most of which are unsigned acts waiting for their big break.

Unsigned Friday brings you the very best unsigned music artists from around the capital, as well as giving these acts a platform to promote their music.

This week, getwestlondon 's Emily Chudy caught up with 20-year-old alternative soul pop artist Joy Nkoyo.

Joy is currently studying composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire, and has previously attended The BRIT School, which famously boasts Adele, Kate Nash, Rizzle Kicks and Amy Winehouse among its alumni.

Joy said: "I'd describe my music as Alternative/Soul/Pop. My songs touch on a few different musical styles, but hopefully you can tell it's me!

"I usually get ideas for songs from stories I've read, stuff I've watched on TV, personal experiences and people I know. My favourite artists at the moment are Eska, Lianne La Havas, Tune-Yards and Emily King."

As well as studying music, Joy has performed at prestigious venues and events, including Westfield's Music Cube, upstairs at Ronnie Scott's and on The BRIT Awards Red Carpet.

Joy was also shortlisted for the London's Gig Big Busk competition in 2014.

Joy said: "It [The BRIT Awards] was a lot of fun once I got there. I literally live around the corner from the O2, but was nearly late, and had to climb over a fence in high heels to get in! The audience was mainly made up of excited teenage girls, but they seemed really nice.

"A definite highlight was performing upstairs at Ronnie Scott's last month. It felt so good to have a room full of people, enjoying my music and being supportive. I was on a high for days.

"There are definitely knock-backs and closed doors, but I can 100% say that every opportunity I have missed has made me a more determined person. Often, you have to go and make opportunities for yourself."

Joy said: "I'm currently studying composition at Trinity Laban Conservatoire. I'd love to release a couple of EPs whilst I'm studying, do more live shows and see where it takes me."

Joy Nkoyo will be performing live in London soon; watch this space for performance dates and details.
