DANANANANAYKROYD HOXTON BAR AND GRILL APRIL 2

THERE must be something in the water in Glasgow - either that or fried Mars Bars have some sort of oddball creative powers.

The city's latest exports, Dananananaykroyd have been hovering around for a couple of years, with just a handful of singles and an EP under their belts. But this year they've shifted up a gear and their debut album Hey Everyone!, released a few days after their Hoxton Square gig, was one of the year's most excitedlyanticipated records.

True to their Weegie roots, it sounds like nothing else. A kooky, punk take on indie, it merges Los

Campesinos' brand of twee-pop with aggresive, blood curdling, raw rock.

In keeping with this, tonight's crowd is one half indie kids, one half pogoing rockers. The show is a sell-out and, with doors opening an hour-and-a-half later than advertised, the crowd are packed in for openers Dutch Uncles and the brilliant, Hefner-esque Favours For Sailors.

By the time Dananananaykroyd burst on to the stage, there's a boozey, expectant atmosphere - something they manage to bottle and sustain for the entire show. When they're on form it's easily

done - with two drummers and one-and-a-half singers (drummer John Baillie Junior leaps from drums to vocals throughout the gig) they're one of the noisiest and energetic bands around.

The banter and camaraderie is contagious and singer Calum Gunn makes the entire crowd feel part of the show. Crowd surfing and swinging his mic around, he's like a yappy little Jack Russell. Guitarist David Roy gets in on the action too, lying down in the middle of the room for an entire song. They might look like Belle and Sebastian's younger cousins, but they couldn't sound further from it.

The first few rows sing along to every song and the band look taken aback. But they shouldn't. Like their townsmen Orange Juice, Bis and Primal Scream before them, they've got all the crucial elements to become a cult band -electric, youthful enthusiasm and fantastic tunes.

Some Dresses, Black Wax and the short, sharp burst that is Hey Everyone! are highlights of a gig that firmly seals their reputation as one of the most exciting and utterly bizarre bands around now,
