Weird pop is promised by a quirky quintet who release their debut single next month. MAXINE MARSHALL investigates
FIVE pairs of skinny jeans, five tousled hairstyles, five pints: Meet Frog, Pearse, Tom, Patrick and Sam - who together make up Rogues. The all-Harrow band, with a slight
Welsh inflection courtesy of Sam, create infectiously catchy songs that you find yourself tapping along to whatever type of music you're into.
Not at all conforming to stereotype the five guys arrived before me, albeit with beers in hand, but not hungover.
The self-described 'weird pop' group say they are accessible to a whole host of different people.
"We're like cool pop - the stuff you will actually like" says Sam.
With influences coming from the UK garage scene and jazz musicians such as Ray Charles, plus The Smiths, The Clash and Blur, Rogues create something unique.
There is a sense of '80s electro, dance and rock; it all blends to form an infectiously addictive sound.
Frog, 20, Pearse, 25, and 23-year-old Tom (all brothers) and Sam, 22, live together along with five other members of the Macintyre family.
Patrick, 22, lives round the corner so between them they have enough relatives around to make them "men of leisure" and self-confessed microwave kings who can also fry anything.
It's a good job they are better in the studio than they are in the kitchen: their single, Not So Pretty, is released on March 16.
The band record all their demos in a 'garden room' - they strongly deny it's just a shed - built by Tom.
Amongst their achievements are touring with Iglu and Hartly (who had a hit with the song In This City), having a demo picked up unknowingly by Zane Lowe and played on Radio 1, and being featured on Steve Lamacq's Live Lounge.
Considering the short period of time they have been together and the height of their success, it's great to see they haven't developed any rock star egos as of yet.
When I question what I thought was their lack of excitement, Pearse told me: "We're aware of how easily it could not be like this anymore.
"I just think of the next thing we have to do. I'm definitely proud of what we've done so far though."
