Nick Mulvey is heading to O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire as part of his UK & Ireland tour.

The Mercury nominated artist will perform in London October 17.

The shows will be in support of his upcoming second studio album 'Wake Up Now', due for release on September 8.

It is the follow-up to his acclaimed debut 'First Mind', which gave Mulvey his second Mercury Prize nomination.

The first was part of the instrumental jazz group Portico Quartet, which he departed in 2011 to pursue a solo career.

On the upcoming release he says: "Naturally, this record reflects all that's been happening in my life recently, as a man and as an artist, trying to answer a call to be a better person.

"The world seems so lacking in respect for the true value of life, for the planet, and for social justice. But seeds of hope are everywhere.

"I'm not saying it's simple at all and I can be as lost as anybody. But I know there are maps. I sing about those maps."

Many of the tracks have been written in response to global issues including 'We Are Never Apart', which looks at the crisis of the Dakota oil pipeline running through sacred Native American land at Standing Rock - and our own government's plans to start fracking here.

He adds: "In the past I've veiled my lyrics in metaphor, but I want to be clearer now. My ambition is to be simple, to speak plainly and to be understood.

"I shied away before because I wasn't ready to be this direct in my writing. Now I am ready. And I realised that it's important in these times for artists to be brave and bold," which he notes his new experiences of fatherhood as impacting his decision.

Mulvey will also be previewing the album with some in-store signings and intimate performances at the likes of Rough Trade East and Banquet Records.

He plays the O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire on October 17 as part of his UK & Ireland tour and tickets are available from See Tickets.
