The annual Mercury Prize has been awarded 25 times since it's inaugural event in 1992.

First received by alt-rock group Primal Scream and more recently by grime artist Skepta, the award ceremony was initially established as a response to the BRIT Awards.

Over the years the selected albums on the shortlist have been seen as wide-reaching, with all genres of the UK music scene being represented.

Each year a panel of music industry experts select around 11-12 albums that are considered the best releases from the previous 12 months.

The judges then vote to award one act with the coveted Mercury Prize which includes a £20,000 cash prize.

This year's Mercury Prize shortlist features new artists including Loyle Carner, The Big Moon and Blossoms and established acts like Kate Tempest, alt-J and The xx.

The ceremony will take place on September 14 in front a live audience, with performances from the shortlisted acts.

Music fans can attend the event at Hammersmith's Eventim Apollo with tickets available from Eventim here.
