Forget Ironman, there is a new challenge looming for anyone who is brave enough to take it on.

The London Marathon events team has launched the London Classics which requires participants to run the Virgin Money London Marathon , swim two miles at the open water swimming festival Swim Serpentine and cycle the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100.

You do not have to do all of the events in one year, anyone who has completed the London Marathon since 1981 or cycled the RideLondon-Surrey 100 since it launched in 2013 can enter.

Around 4,000 swimmers took part in the one mile Swim Serpentine 2016

The first chance to claim a London Classics medal will be this year at the Swim Serpentine event on September 16 with the introduction of a two mile swim.

Those completing the trio of challenges will swim into the London Classics Hall of Fame and receive a medal engraved with the words "Et ego Londinium vici" which translates to "I too have conquered London".

London Marathon events director, Hugh Brasher, said: “We have brought together the best marathon in the world, the world’s greatest cycling festival and our inspirational open water swimming event, Swim Serpentine, to create the London Classics.

Anyone who has completed the London Marathon since 1981 are eligible

"This will become one of the world’s great sporting challenges.

"Over the years, the London Marathon has inspired hundreds of thousands to take up running and we hope the London Classics will inspire tens of thousands to try a new sport.

"If you have already completed the London Marathon and the Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100, you can enter this September’s two mile London Classics wave at Swim Serpentine and your name will become part of sporting history."
