John Lewis wants customers to jump on their beds and rearrange furniture and stay the night in an in-store flat, this autumn.

The department store chain will open a fully furnished flat in in its Oxford Street flagship store in which customers are allowed to jump on beds, rearrange furniture and play with the products.

Shoppers can even apply to dine and spend a night at the in-store home.

The Residence, named by the chain as a "home away from home" will boast a living and dining area, a bedroom, a study, an indoor terrace and a fitted kitchen with wine cooler.

There will also be stocked cupboards, fresh coffee and a daily newspaper delivery service.

Shoppers have also been promised they can "try absolutely everything within the space".

Those who make the cut for an overnight stay have the choice of an all-access tour of the store or an opportunity to shop an extra hour after the store has closed and will get a concierge at their disposal.

Lucky applicants will be able to have private access to The Residence from 6.30pm to 9am the following morning, when breakfast will be provided for them.

The more demanding customers can even fill out a checklist of things they want to have added to the flat.

Those who don't fancy a night at the store can apply to hold a dinner party at The Residence instead, but there is no need for customers to sort out their own drinks and dinner; an expert chef and a cocktail mixologist are provided.

The flat will be open to everyone during shop hours, when shoppers can join different workshops which teach choosing the right bedding, lighting your home and organising a dinner party.

Director of customer experience Peter Cross said: "We want our customers to discover an altogether different way of shopping.

"By encouraging them to bounce up and down on a bed and sit around a dressed dining table, we are aiming to create an environment which is a close as possible to their homes.”

The Residence is part of John Lewis' autumn campaign and will stay in the store for four weeks from Saturday (September 16) but if The Residence is a success it might be extended.

Customers interested in a sleepover or an in-store dinner can apply on four weekends from Saturday, September 16 to Sunday, September 24 by visiting the concierge team in the Oxford Street John Lewis.
