Crowds gathered all the way down Regent Street to see the magic of Christmas come to life in Westminster .

'The Spirit of Christmas' lights installation brought Regent Street to a standstill as a star-studded line-up of celebrities took to the stage to launch the event on Thursday (November 17) evening.

Presenters Jamie Theakston, Holly Willoughby and former Spice Girl Emma Bunton arrived on stage to greet the crowds and push the button that saw 300,000 sparkling LED lights light up the shopping street with angels.

The twinkling display runs along Regent Street across Piccadilly and finishes up at Waterloo Place.

A fun-filled evening of entertainment greeting the thousands with the cast of The Snowman opening the show.

Angels of Christmas light up Regent Street

Huge angel figure line the street, each one boasting a 17 metre wingspan.

Created by James Glancy Design, the display celebrates the street's long association with Christmas.

The design pays homage to the street's very first display from 1954.

Festivities continued with performances from singers Rebecca Ferguson and Tom Odell.

Earlier this month, Craig David, The Vamps and Louisa Johnson switched on the Oxford Street Christmas lights .
