Taxi company Uber has called off plans to allow app users to claim free ice creams following a suspected terrorist attack in Nice.

The company had announced customers could tap a button to request a box of four Magnums be delivered to them on Friday (July 15) , but has decided to cancel as a mark of respect.

This is due to Uber having many drivers in Nice, where a man drove a lorry through large crowds of pedestrians celebrating Bastille Day in the city on the south coast of France on Thursday night (July 14).

It means Londoners, as well as users in cities around the world will not be able to claim the free offer today. Uber has yet to announce a new date for the offer.

A spokesman for Uber said: "After last night's tragic events, our thoughts are with the people of France, including our community of riders and drivers in Nice.

"Now is the time to pause and reflect so we are cancelling the distribution of ice-creams we had planned for today."

At least 80 people were killed and many more injured in the incident in Nice, which occurred while crowds were watching a fireworks display to celebrate French democracy.

The truck is reported to have driven for more than a mile along the busy pavement and weapons were found inside when the dirver was shot dead.

Heathrow has offered passengers due to fly to Nice the chance to rearrange their flight in light of the events, while a number has been issued for those with loved ones out in Nice to call and Facebook has also moved to help people let their families and friends know they are safe.
