Aldi Specially Selected mince pies six pack £1.15 (BEST VALUE)

Aldi Specially Selected Mince Pies £1.15, 6 pack

These crumbly all-butter mince pies with brandy-laced mincemeat just melt in your mouth. The excellent pastry is soft and tasty but not so weak it disintegrates when you pick it up.

Great value for money and it actually tastes of Christmas. The filling is very fruity, not mushy and has just a hint of booze. A winner all round and there is also a 12 pack box of mini versions available as well.

Sayers mince pies, four for £1.50

Sayers mince pies, four for £1

These taste like a home-made mince pie – and we mean that in a good way. The pastry was short, buttery and had the perfect level of crumbliness.

The taste of the filling wasn’t overpowered by sweetness: there was plenty of it and it was nicely moist. A great traditional mince pie.

Greggs 6 sweet mince pies 45p each or 6 for £1.50

Gregg's 6 sweet mince pies. 45p each or £1.50 for six

Baked in store, the award-winning pies contain Bramley apple, vine fruits, candied orange and lemon peel. They divided our tasters.

Those with a sweet tooth loved the pie and gave it top marks while others found it too sugary.

Some gave it top marks and pronounced it their favourite while others awarded the lowest mark possible.

One disappointed taster declared: “The overall impression is just sugar with little Christmas spice coming through” while another more happy eater summed it up saying “Lovely home-made look to these pies which had a flaky shortcrust pastry and tasty filling which was not too sweet or synthetic tasting.”

Waitrose 6 shortcrust mince pies £1.70

Waitrose Christmas nine mini-mince pie selection. £3.

A nice, crumbly, buttery pastry with a sweet aftertaste. It offers a short and crisp bite and the filling is moist and fruity ... there just needs to be more of it.

When it comes to the ratio of pastry versus filling, the pastry wins. They're not bad, but more filling please to keep spirits high over the holidays.

The Co-operative 6 Truly Irresistible luxury all butter mince pies £2

The Co-operative Truly Irresistible Luxury All Butter Mince Pies £2

The pastry is a bit crumbly, but it is not too thick and it does not overwhelm the filling, which is generous and moist.

However, it is hard to taste any festive spices though or the brandy that is listed among the ingredients. A festive stand-by.

Lidl Snowy Lodge luxury mince pies, pack of 6, £1.15

Lidl Snowy Lodge luxury mince pies, pack of 6, £1.15

These mince pies have mincemeat laced with Courvoisier, but it could have done with a touch more to really make them stand out.

Overall, a good pie with a reasonable balance of fruit, festive spice and sweetness. The right amount of pastry but it's just a little on the dry side.

3/5

Morrisons luxury deep filled mince pies, pack of 4, £1.70 or 2 packs for £2.50

Morrisons luxury deep filled mince pies, pack of 4, £1.70

A very generous size which is quite deep and properly filled.

There is a lot of sugar on top which could seem a little heavy for those who don’t particularly have a sweet tooth.

The pastry however is just right with a good buttery taste and the right amount to encase the flavourful filling, which is just lacking an alcohol kick.

3/5

Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference all butter mince pies, pack of 6, £2.50

Sainsbury's Taste the Difference all butter mince pies, pack of 6, £2.50

These large pies have a nice looking pastry which is slightly buttery but does lack flavour.

There is a decent amount of filling which includes a hint of spices and a festive orange flavour. However, there is no wow factor and overall, these mince pies are quite bland.

2/5

Tesco lattice mince pies, pack of 6, £1.65

Tesco lattice top mince pies, pack of 6, £1.65

The pastry lattice top makes the pie looks pretty, but it tends to overwhelm the taste of the filling. The first mouthful seems to be all pastry and makes everything a bit dry.

When you do finally munch your way through the filling, it's a little disappointing. There's no strong taste of anything. Maybe it needs a bit of cream or brandy butter to cheer it up.
