The number of new takeaways and mobile food outlets in west London has nearly quadrupled in a year.

There were 212 new takeaways registered with councils in west London in 2014/15, up from 54 in 2013/14.

The number of new mobile food units - such as street food outlets like Dub Plates Kitchen in Hounslow, The Urban German in Westminster, and Tico's Hot Dog Feast in Ealing - newly registered across the area was 53 in 2014/15, up from 15 in 2013/14.

Hounslow borough saw a particular boom in new food businesses, with new registrations up by more than twice as much in a year, from 19 to 50, and almost doubling in Harrow, up from 111 to 205.

Hounslow has seen the number of newly registered mobile food units rise from six in 2013/14 to 17 in 2014/15, while it has jumped from none to 17 new registrations in 2014/15 in Hammersmith & Fulham.

Harrow has seen the number of new takeaways registered triple, from 10 in 2013/14 to 30 in 2014/15, while the number of newly registered restaurants, cafes or other caterers being registered in Hounslow tripled in a year, from nine to 27.

Figures are based on a Freedom of Information request for food premises registering with the council, so they can be inspected as part of the food hygiene requirements.

Most businesses will register when they open - or in the month or so before - although some may not realise the requirement until they have been trading for a while, although they are likely to be registered when they come to the attention of the council.

Others may need to re-register following a change in name or premises.
