Cosy yet private, this roomy pub is perfect for a romantic table for two, or for a large party looking to celebrate a special occasion or simply just a nice family meal.

Sitting on the banks of the River Thames with a beer garden big enough to rival any in London, this little gem sells itself easily in the summer months, but after stepping inside to escape a chilly October evening, it was clear they had winter down to a tee too.

The Anglers is one of many Fuller's pubs in London but it is a world away from any experience you could expect from a chain restaurant.

The menu has been uniquely created for the Teddington venue and all of the meat is sourced locally from Alton Butchers in Hampshire.

Inside the pub each table was candlelit and there were plenty of little alcoves, one decorated with a bookshelf wall, where diners could really sit back, relax and enjoy being wined and dined.

That is certainly what we did!

To Start

My companion and I were extremely impressed with the menu and needed around 10 minutes to actually come to a decision.

Our waiter, Richard, was quick to provide assistance though and recommended the crispy calamari with smoked paprika aioli from the fixed price menu.

We had spotted a similar dish on the main menu which was served with a nam jim dipping sauce, so Richard kindly offered to give us a taste of both sauces and took our order to the kitchen, not before topping up our wine glasses of course - we did not have to touch the bottle all night!

We chose the Farina Pinot Grigio which was light and refreshing, the perfect accompaniment for squid.

Crispy calamari

Our eyes lit up when the starter was brought to the table, the calamari was crispy as described and extremely tasty.

Those with a taste for something hot should go for the salt and squid from the main menu as the dip is slightly fiery, whilst mild mouths should opt for the fixed priced calamari with the smoked paprika aioli.

Other starters on offer included leek and potato soup, smoked salmon and roasted beetroot.

Main Course

Venison bolognese

The main event and yes, another nightmare with making a decision as everything looked so good.

Eventually, I decided on the venison bolognese from the specials board and my plus one picked the fish stew which was one of the chef's signatures.

Both meals were presented beautifully and were delicious.

Next time I head out to buy ingredients for a bolognese, I may switch to venison, it was just so tasty.

We all know bolognese can be a pretty messy dish to eat and one not usually picked when out on a date - but ladies and gentleman, you are safe with this one as the pasta strips are much thicker than normal spaghetti and rather like a tagliatelle.

Great news if you were planning on cracking out a brand new white top to impress!

Fish stew

My companion was pleased with her fish stew, leaving the bowl polished clean despite being full up to the brim.

Other main dishes included classics like cod and chips and a pie of the day alongside more unusual dishes such as confit rabbit terrine and grilled polenta.

Dessert

Vanilla pannacotta

My fellow diner was too full to tackle a dessert, but I of course obliged and this decision was an easy one - vanilla pannacotta.

It came served with plum compote and a shortbread biscuit on the side.

The smooth texture and creaminess of the pannacotta was complimented well by the sweet tasting compote and of course, is it a pannacotta without a shortbread on the side? Perfect for dipping.

Overall, we had a fantastic evening in a cosy environment which welcomes diners with open arms.

The candlelit tables and top quality food is something which would take me back in a heartbeat.
