If you're looking for a pub that makes you feel you're in the countryside without leaving London, then you'd be making a wise choice in going to the Duke of Clarence.

Despite being situated on a main road, Cross Deep, the entrance to the pub area is a fair way back from the road so, you don't feel overburdened by the passing traffic.

Just over the road is the River Thames, which adds to the country feel of the place.

It's also within walking distance from Twickenham and Strawberry Hill stations, allowing for ease of travel into central London or round to Kingston.

The Alexander Pope in Twickenham launched on September 28 and GetWestLondon was invited down to sample traditional British food and drinks available on offer to guests.

Food

Wild boar sausage

It's not something I've had before but the sharp flavour really set off my tastebuds and it appears to be a perfect appetiser.

Bacon wrapped dates

Now, I'm not a huge fan of dates in general but wrap bacon around them and they are delicious.

Pigs in blankets

Pigs in Blankets

If shops regularly sold chipolatas wrapped in bacon then I'd buy them often (take note Tesco and Sainsburys). If you're a meat eater then you will love them.

Cheeseburger

The danger with having similar food to rivals is you have competition. However, the Alexander Pope's burgers are excellent, seasoned well and enjoyable to eat.

Sausage rolls

A staple British dish and the larger sausage was an inspired choice. The pastry, which is so easy to get wrong, was done just right; not too thin and not too thick.

Fish and Chips

Fish and chips

A classic British dish but the Alexander Pope's version lived up to the mark. The batter on the fish was perfect and the meat itself was cooked to perfection. Personally, I'd prefer regular peas to mushy ones.

Sausage and mash

If I was to go back there, and it's likely that I will, then this is what I'd order. The sausages were excellent, the mash was soft. But, what really made the dish was the gravy. Exquisite.

Pigs in Blankets

Bakewell tart

A classic British pudding and it was an excellent way to round off the selection of food available in the restaurant.

Drinks

Becketts Gin

Gin is not something I have ever drunk before and neat gin is certainly an acquired taste. The minty aftertaste made me feel as if I had cleaned my teeth.

Gin

Dorking Brewery IPA

It's always good to see establishments select some ales brewed in the surrounding area. The IPA was a relaxed drink and one to enjoy slowly.

FourPure Juicebox

This was a more fruity IPA. Despite being served from a can, it did not have the metallic taste you associate with canned drinks.

Atmosphere

Inside the Alexander Pope

The glass frontage allows you to sit and enjoy the day passing, 365 days a year, while remaining warm and dry.

It is a place to go to relax after work and have a quiet couple of drinks to unwind after a hard day or even take a loved one out for a nice meal.

You can have a larger social gathering with rooms available in the hotel to sleep in and also separate rooms to host a conference, or a private party.

Would I go back? I can certainly see myself paying it another visit in the not too distant future.
