A popular takeaway spot in Acton has been named as one of the UK's top 10 new fish and chip shops.

Stone's Fish & Chips, in Horn Lane, has been shortlisted as a semi-finalist as part of the 30th annual National Fish & Chips Awards, organised by Seafish.

The takeaway, which features in the Best Newcomer category, will now compete in the final to try and clinch the title of the UK's best new fish and chip shop.

Stone's Fish & Chips is the only representative from London and is up against contenders such as Church Street Fish Bar in Abertillery and The Bearded Sailor in Leeds.

To reach this stage, the 10 finalists have been assessed against a variety of judging criteria, including the best adoption of innovative approaches to running the shop to the knowledge of sustainable sourcing.

Over the coming weeks, judges will make unannounced visits to the shop premises for mystery dining assessments, in order to determine three finalists to compete for the national title.

Stone's Fish & Chips has been shortlisted for a national award

Jack Stone, the owner of Stone's Fish & Chips, announced the news on their Facebook page.

He said: “We are absolutely delighted... that (out of several hundred entries) we have been nominated by the National Federation of Fish Friers in the top 10 "best newcomer award 2018".

“Thanks to everyone for their support and especially to my amazing team! Let's hope we go on to win.”

Cod this be the best new fish and chips in the UK? (Another bad joke, sorry!)

The winner of the Best Newcomer Award will be announced at The National Fish & Chip Awards’ 30th-anniversary ceremony in London on January 25, 2018.

Marcus Coleman, chief executive at Seafish, said: “Opening a new fish and chip shop can be a daunting experience for this reason, but our top ten have certainly risen to the challenge.

Batter get down there quickly to get some fish and chips (there's no stopping these puns)

“Not only have they proven that they can rustle up the perfect portion of fish and chips, they’ve demonstrated fantastic knowledge and understanding of the wider industry.

“I’m certain the future of our nation’s favourite takeaway is in good hands, and I'm in no doubt that these ten outstanding shops will be integral businesses within their local communities for years to come.”
