THE oldest orchestra in the country will celebrate 140 years of performing by playing a programme of masterpieces on Saturday, June 30.

Joined by internationally acclaimed soloist Emma Johnson, the Royal Orchestral Society will perform at St John’s Church, in Smith Square, Westminster.

The society was founded in 1872 by Queen Victoria’s second son, the Duke of Edinburgh, who was an enthusiastic violinist and the society’s first president.

Conductor Orlando Jopling said: “It is really wonderful to conduct the Royal Orchestral Society in its 140th year. Playing with a soloist of Emma’s standard is an honour.

“In a year when we will be hosting a cultural Olympics and inviting the world to town, I hope Londoners will come from far and wide to enjoy a classic London evening out listening to the cream of London’s talent.”
