Double trouble

TROUBLE lies ahead when a church hall is more than double-booked in Argosy Players' latest offering, Out of Focus.

The amateur dramatics group presents an hilarious Alan Ayckbourn-style comedy in which confusion reigns when a brownie meeting clashes with a badminton match, a talk about steam locomotives and a pantomime rehearsal.

Luckily everyone unites for the panto, but alliances form and as opening night approaches, Bob and Kath's marital bliss is put under strain by the presence of lusty Linda, the secretary.

Meanwhile, bossy brownie leader, Helen, stages a walkout and pursues policeman David, although he only has eyes for Sue.

Ladies' man Wayne hopes to impress, while nerdy Leonard is rapidly boring everyone into submission.

Tensions rise during the final night party, when timid vicar's wife Yvonne discovers her confidence, Helen gets her comeuppance and everyone else receives their just desserts.

Discover the secret behind the black veil

CHARLES Dickens' little known short story, The Black Veil, has been transformed into a chilling stage show.

One winter's evening in about 1800, a young medical practitioner is seated by a fire in his parlour, listening to the wind and the rain beating against the window.

When a visitor arrives, dressed in clothes of deep mourning, the upper part of her figure is carefully muffled in a black shawl with a black veil covering her face.

She appears distressed and afraid, but what is her secret?

And what terrifying and tragic mystery lies beneath her veil?

What shocking events await the doctor? Probably one of the most intense pieces of theatre the stage has ever seen.

what? The Black Veil where? Beck Theatre, Grange Road, Hayes, UB3 2UE when? Thursday, May 5 to Saturday, May 7, 7.30pm (matinee Saturday 2.30pm) cost? £15-£18 see: www.becktheatre.org.uk

Spooky English village play with a funny twist

SHAKE, Rattle and Run, a spooky tale about English village life with a comedy twist, is brought to the stage by the Arrow Players.

Paul Eden's study in his vicarage in rural East Anglia is a chaotic crossroads for all kinds of bizarre characters and activities.

The village cheese and wine party arrives a week too early, Paul's nymphomaniac ex-wife tries to seduce any man who will listen, while almost everyone is determined to get their hands on a valuable painting.

And then there's the body - or is it bodies?

Of course, the house is haunted, sometimes visited by a phantom monk, other times by a skeleton.

What is the vicar trying to hide and what happened to the French maid? A plot guaranteed to keep you guessing right to the very end.
