Holby City (8pm, BBC1)

Remember Louise Delamere from the Channel 4 series No Angels?  Seven years later she’s nursing again, this time as Holby’s new director of nursing Colette Sheward.  She’s not that yet though – she arrives in a taxi and out of uniform with a brain patient she wants Guy Self  to operate on.

But if you’ve watched Holby at all, you’ll know that medical staff don’t just turn up and get all the best dialogue for no reason.

So rest assured that Colette will go through all the correct recruitment procedures before the episode is out (getting offered the job by Guy in the Holby car park, in other words).

But you’re going to love Colette, I promise. She introduces herself to  Harry by saying: “You just look pretty and leave the thinking to me,” and then she tells Guy “You’re an idiot,” “man up” and “do something with your face”.

From which you’ll gather that her relationship with Guy  is very different to Harry’s brown-nosing or Digby’s politeness.

Digby actually bows to his new CEO tonight which is adorable, in a slightly pathetic kind of way.

Serena, of course, is still smarting at the way Guy has pinched the job that was rightfully hers, but she’s got her hands full elsewhere performing a rectal exam on a patient with something dodgy wedged up his jacksie.

How the mighty have fallen – she’ll be emptying bedpans next week at this rate.

Last Tango In Halifax (9pm, BBC1)

The family strife in Sally Wainwright’s tetchy drama now spans four generations as Alan (Derek Jacobi) seems to have become official babysitter for his new great-granddaughter.

The teenage parents don’t seem to know what to do with her and the poor little mite hasn’t even been given a name yet.  This must be very galling for Kate, who is desperate to have a baby of her own.  She accidentally reveals as much to Celia tonight – although she is the last person you should entrust with a sensitive secret.

Celia (Anne Reid) is a brilliant creation: she doesn’t mean to cause offence and yet manages to do it so efficiently. Her big gob is the source of fresh trauma for poor Gillian this week when she accidentally blabs something that she’s got no business blabbing.

Gillian’s got money worries too which is why she’s very interested in John’s offer to invest in her farm, but less interested in John – despite the fact that he has made her the heroine of the brand new book he’s writing.  The early reviews from his estranged wife Caroline aren’t good.

American Horror Story: Coven (10pm, Fox)

Danny Huston is the latest Hollywood heavyweight adding some devilment to this series which has become almost sinfully enjoyable.  In an episode called The Axeman Cometh, he plays a real-life, jazz-loving serial killer who terrorised New Orleans a century earlier.

But, in this re-telling of his legend, he  hadn’t reckoned on the young ladies at Miss Robichaux’s Academy and, in particular,  a young witch called Millie (Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer).

The Axeman is about to make an unscheduled encore when Zoe, Nan and Queenie decide to get to the bottom of Madison’s disappearance. They figure that if she’s dead, they’ll be able to contact her using a Ouija board, although, by now their noses should really have picked up the smell of her decomposing body wafting down the stairs. So much for supernatural powers.

And while Misty Day’s resurrection talents are in almost constant demand, there’s one more surprising revelation about Fiona (Jessica Lange) still to come.

SOAP ROUND-UP

Emmerdale (7pm, ITV)

Despite being about as welcome as Foot And Mouth, Ross-the-carjacker will be sticking around a while longer – just long enough to rob the farm and pay off the debt he owes to his criminal overlord.

Don’t tell his auntie Moira.  Chances are you’ll be more entertained by  Amelia’s beauty pageant debut at the Little Miss Yorkshire contest. With Kerry as her stylist, mentor and make-up artist she’s got this one in the bag.

Coronation Street (8pm, ITV)

It’s still the day before Peter and Carla’s wedding and those pre-wedding nerves are getting to Peter.  Alone in the flat, he pours himself a glass of wine just as he gets a visit from Tina.

Resisting the temptation of just one of those things will require all the self-discipline he’s got.   Resisting both will be a minor miracle.

Eastenders (7.30pm, BBC1)

When Roxy realises how quickly Alfie has erased her from his emotions she has to ask herself:  What was that all about?

She tells Ronnie tonight that she’s thinking about leaving Walford and who could blame her?  There’s not much for her to stick around for, but Ronnie has other ideas and she hits Kat and Alfie with a bombshell that spells big changes for them – and for the show.
