Him and Her (10pm, BBC Three)

No doubt there are purists out there who are dismayed to see that loved-up slackers Becky and Steve have been released from the captivity of their bedsit and allowed out into the wild.

Certainly, we’ve never seen them looking quite this clean before. And after three series in which almost nothing happened, now creator Stefan Golaszewski has gone to the other extreme, by bringing us a single day that is so eventful it takes up the whole series.

But the comedy,  Becky and Steve’s relationship and the chemistry between actors Sarah Solemani and Russell Tovey are all more than strong enough to thrive in this unfamiliar atmosphere, even if, in tonight's second episode it means the couple are physically separated for minutes at a time.  (And lets not forget that we’re talking about a man who, when he proposed, admitted that he missed Becky when she went to the toilet.)

The momentous occasion that’s lured them outside is the wedding of Becky’s toxic sister Laura and while Steve is on best man duties  back at the hotel, Becky is in the back of a limo watching the bride pick fights with pedestrians through the sunroof.

How Becky has got this far in life without shoving  Laura’s head down numerous toilets just goes to show what a wonderful person she must be.

Meanwhile, Paul, the terrified groom is desperately trying to avoid becoming Becky’s brother in law. And all he needs Steve to do is fake a heart attack.  Can’t see a problem with that.

Legacy (9pm, BBC Two)

Ah, 1974. It was the year of Tiger Feet and Remember You’re A Womble. Liverpool won the FA Cup, Abba won Eurovision and Tom Baker was the new Doctor Who.

But it was also the year of the three day week, petrol shortages, power cuts and industrial action, which British intelligence suspected was Soviet  orchestrated.

Paula Milne’s one-off drama, based on the 2001 novel by former soldier and diplomat Alan Judd  is a taut and paranoid little affair. Trainee MI6 agent Charles Thoroughgood (Charlie Cox) is asked to revive a friendship with a Russian lad he knew at Oxford so he spies for Britain.

Moriarty actor Andrew Scott cuts a sympathetic figure as Viktor Koslov who now works at the Russian embassy and has some surprising news for his old chum about his father’s past.  It’s involving in a   subtle, underplayed way, even if most of the suspense arises mostly from wondering how long it will take Thoroughgood to start up an affair with his colleague’s wife Anna (Romola Garai).

Getting Rich in the Recession: Scrappers (9pm, Channel 4)

If you’re slightly annoyed by  scrap collectors who prowl your street  you might be even less welcoming to realise they’re probably earning more than you are.  “I don’t really know what a recession is,” says Adam, who can earn as much as £800 on  a good day and has a Mercedes and a Rolex  to show for his efforts.

The first in this new series hangs out at Sydenham Scrap Yard in South London, run by Michael which has a turnover of more than £7m a year.

We also meet Trevor, a cheery, polite scrapper who worked in the music industry and Cheryl, one of the few women in the business.

However,  all of them  face slimmer pickings in the future as newcomers from Eastern Europe are getting in on the action.

SOAP ROUND-UP

Emmerdale (7pm and 8pm, ITV)

Hell hath no fury like a drunk woman with a JCB digger.

That’s what Jai discovers tonight when Charity  gets revenge on him for having a kid with the woman she rather unkindly describes as “Scrapey Face”.

In contrast, Alicia couldn’t be more supportive about David becoming a dad to another woman’s child and there’s a very romantic proposal in the offing tonight.

Eastenders (7.30pm, BBC1)

Apologies to anyone in the Walford area still waiting for their pizza to be delivered – but Alfie’s need for that  delivery scooter was far greater than your Deep Crust Meat Feast.

Definitely a contender for one of the shortest marriages in soap history, Roxy and Alfie, pictured, didn’t even make it out of the little room where they go to sign the register before it all went belly up and the groom spent his wedding night not with his bride, but his ex-wife.  No wonder Roxy is stomping towards to the Queen Vic tonight clutching a hammer…
