Westminster -born Eddie Redmayne has been nominated for a BAFTA, alongside co-star Alicia Vikander, for his role in stunning biopic The Danish Girl .

Redmayne will go up against Leonardo DiCaprio (The Revenant), Michael Fassbender (Steve Jobs), Matt Damon (The Martian) and Bryan Cranston (Trumbo) in the leading actor award category for his role as Lili Elbe, one of the first known transgender women to receive sex reassignment surgery.

Marked as a favourite for another Oscar win, the actor has already been nominated for a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award for The Danish Girl.

Co-star Vikander will face competition from Cate Blanchett (Carol), Brie Larson (Room), Dame Maggie Smith (The Lady In The Van) and Saoirse Ronan (Brooklyn) in the leading actress category.

Favourite in the category is Cate Blanchett for her role in Carol, an adaptation of a Patricia Highsmith novel which documents the love story between Blanchett's character, a wealthy, married socialite and Rooney Mara's character, a young woman working in a department store.

Heading up the supporting actress category is Kate Winslet (Steve Jobs), Rooney Mara (Carol), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight), Julie Walters (Brooklyn) and Alicia Vikander (Ex Machina).

British director Sir Ridley Scott will be hoping for his first BAFTA win in the director category after being nominated for The Martian.

He will be up against Steven Spielberg (Bridge of Spies), Adam McKay (The Big Short), Todd Haynes (Carol) and Alejandro G Inarritu (The Revenant).

The BAFTAs, which are seen as a good indicator of who will achieve Oscar success, will be handed out on Sunday February 14 , at a star-studded ceremony at west London's Royal Opera House.

The films leading the nominations with a total of nine nominations each are Bridge of Spies and Carol. Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been nominated in four categories.

At last year's BAFTA awards, Boyhood won Best Film, while Eddie Redmayne lifted the Best Actor trophy and Julianne Moore was Best Actress for her role in Still Alice.
