The attic was a mess: there were stacks of junk-filled boxes piled on top of each other, dust everywhere, and with my torch, I saw many spiders and cobwebs scattered everywhere.
I got a shiver down my spine. I began to search for the tablecloth my mother had told me to find up here. After looking through four boxes, I noticed it was lying on top of an old, unplugged computer screen at the back of the room.
When I saw it, I though it was just an old one which had stopped working. I was wrong, as I found out when I approached the computer to get to the cloth. I did not notice something lying on the dirty floor.
On it, I tripped and fell, landing hard. My foot had accidentally hit the ‘ON’ switch. - I knew nothing would happen, as it was unplugged. I was wrong; it turned on! But when the computer screen lit up, something strange happened.
That is how it started. How it ended was completely different: I’m stuck in a desert somewhere, I have no idea of how to get out and I can only ask a turtle who has been watching me, doing nothing for ages. How I got here was a cool adventure, but I’m not really enjoying this!
After the screen turned on, for some reason Google came up. I’d no idea how it was happening, as I had no keyboard or mouse, but like the computer had a mind of it’s own, my name was being typed into the search box on the screen.
I was shocked and could not take my eyes off the display. Then ‘Google Search’ had been clicked. The results that came up were unbelievable: all the links to the sites for results started with "JOHN SMITH-MISSING".
My mouth opened wide and I could not believe what I was seeing. Many thoughts and questions came into my mind. "I’m here! I was just with my mum! What’s this all about?" I shouted out loud.
Nothing made sense. Different links were being clicked and each one claimed that I had gone missing for five whole months! There was a video on YouTube of an interview of my family talking about how much they missed me and wanted me back. A warm tear rolled from my eye, onto my cheek.
I desperately wanted to just run downstairs and hug my family, but I could not. – I was unable to move. I was frozen.
After that, I just watched the computer. I saw it go through articles about my disappearance, looked at a Wikipedia page on it, wrote messages on a blog on a social networking site about "What Could Have Happened", and played a game, which the aim was to rescue me from an alien kidnap. I was utterly confused and bewildered.
I had no idea about how any of this was happening and I didn’t understand why my ‘disappearance’ was so important on the Net.
I was left clueless and I could do nothing but think. I thought about what might happen to me, would anyone find me? Was this really real? I longed and prayed for hope and help. Smiling inside, I was incredibly grateful when I found it:
It was as though someone had listened to my thoughts; the computer opened a received email. Written were the strangest words;
John, just think. CTRL ALT DELETE.
At first, it took me a while to understand, but I worked it out; I’d known it all along! I had even said before that all I could do was think! I thought about before, when I needed help and then the email came up, and I thought if anyone would find me and a page on ‘Police Search Results’ came up.
I now knew that I only had to think about what I needed, and like the computer was listening to me, I could access it on the Internet. I could control the World Wide Web from my brain.
And as for the CTRL ALT DELETE , I remembered, from my ICT lessons, that those keys can be used to unfreeze a computer and the programs that are running! "Sorted!" I thought, and laughed inside.
I had worked it out; I had to unfreeze the computer. But first I needed a mouse and keyboard. As I thought that, a PC World website came up, found a mouse and keyboard and bought them!
Like magic, they appeared before me. I then had to go onto the Task Manager; I had to press the keys to do so. I couldn’t move, so I had to think, with all the brainpower I had, about pressing those three keys.
I tried hard, not giving up, until finally then keys went down and Task Manager appeared. The mouse then moved along the screen, to the computer icon and pressed Stop.
As it did so, all my muscles and joints felt as though they were released, like a tight knot being untangled. I could move again! I managed to get up with a sensation of excitement, happiness and a large, grinning smile on my face. I ran quickly towards the door.
However, that was not the end; I realised that the walls of the room were quickly moving closer together; the door was sealing and the room got smaller! I really did not, and still cannot, understand how it happened; all I could really think about was getting out. Then, magically, I landed on the sand with a loud thud. I was in the desert.
I had told this whole story to the turtle many times. I don’t know why I was telling the story to him, as he is a turtle; but he’s a good listener. I guess I thought that he could help me.
I’m not really worried or scared anymore: I do not think I will stay here for long; I will get safely back home.
I can just sense it.
