It is the most heart-breaking moment for any parent to get a call from
the police telling you that they have arrested your son. Dermott was 25
at this point, but the police needed to verify his address. I went down
the station and I felt sick when I found out what the charge was.

This was my moment to show 'em all that I could hold my nerve. If I
played it smart I could get off this charge.
The war of nerves had begun. When I got let out on bail, Cobra was
there waiting for me, telling me "Prison is alright really. As long as
you got respect.”

Cobra comes out and Dermott immediately gets himself involved in
serious crime. This was no coincidence. That man is an evil influence
on my son. I was going to get the best lawyer I could afford, and get
my son off this horrible charge.

After Dermott gets lets out, he calls me. He never called before. I
wondered - what brought this on, all of a sudden? But I was glad.

With Cobra coming out of the closet I needed to get myself a girlfriend
sharpish, to keep old lover-boy away. Donna seemed like a nice girl and
quite keen. I then called Cobra – “Look Cobra – thanks I’m flattered I
really am. But I ain’t that way, I’ve got a girlfriend.” I also said –
“Whatever you told me – I won’t breathe it to another soul.”
"You can tell whoever you want,” he replies. “I am a man who loves
other men - and I don't care who knows it. I'm not living a lie any

Dermott never knew his mother, that had to count as mitigating
circumstances. I was determined to keep my son out of jail. I knew
Peter would also help.

I met with Frank and suggested pooling some money together for a decent
brief. I thought about organizing a fund raiser and I needed Jerry to
help me. This was a time for friends to pull together.

Using up our savings for a solicitor for Dermott? Oh no you *********
