When's the last time you went to the British Museum?

If you're as embassed as I am, the answer just might be 'never'. Words cannot express how grateful I am that my travesty has been rectified, and I've already been back since my first visit last Wednesday.

The original intention was to catch the American prints exhibition before it closes on September 7.

As expected, it's well worth the trip. I was blown away by the subtle yet surprising variation of techniques between Martin Lewis; Robert Buggs; George Bellows; Robert Gwathmey and Claire Mahl Moore, to name but a few.

But when faced with the immensity of the permanent collections of treaures, I knew I was in trouble.

Five or so more hours on Sunday and I'm still nowhere near seeing it all. Mummies, monoliths, tribal artefacts and so much more. With all this for free, I can't wait to see what Hadrian: Empire and Conflict (until October 26) has in stall for s12.

The America Scene, Prints from Hopper to Pollock, is at the British Museum, Great Russell Street (5 min walk from Tottenham Court Rd or Holborn tube) until September 7. Call 020 7323 8000. See www.britishmuseum.org
