Hundreds of locals were treated to a unique performance on Saturday (July 2) as Chutney in the Street! by Kuljit Bhamra MBE came to Hounslow as part of the Bell Square arts programme.

The performance - on twice during the day - presented a charming love story between a princess and a man who must lift a demon's curse to win her love.

The story included dance, storytelling, audience participation, and gorgeous costumes, along with a unique style of music, Chutney, which combines soca with traditional Indian rhythms.

Kuljit Bhamra MBE, who produced and performed in the show, and has worked on film scores including Bhaji on the Beach, A Winter of Love, and Bend it Like Beckham, explained that Chutney music originates in the southern Caribbean and has Indian influences.

The style brings together the Indo-Carribbean communities of Trinidad, Guyana and Suriname.

Bell Square Hounslow puts on FREE outdoor shows every two weeks, from circus, to acrobatics, to dance.

Coming up next at Bell Square is French circus company Île O (July 16), Spanish mask performance Andante (July 30), and sculpture installation Lifeboat (August 13).

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council , said: "There is literally something for everyone to go and see and be entertained in Bell Square this summer. You can get to see live entertainment for free and on your door step."
