John Terry was keen to point out that he doesn’t value what Robbie Savage has got to say for himself during the pre-match press conference at Cobham on Tuesday.

The Chelsea skipper takes on board what the likes of Gary Neville and Rio Ferdinand talk about in their role as pundits given their more illustrious careers with Manchester United.

Terry’s CV speaks for itself and he can add another bullet point to the growing list of achievements after becoming another record tonight at the Bridge.

The former Three Lions captain earned his 107th Champions League start against Dynamo and broke Paul Scholes’ record for an Englishman in the competition.

And his record-breaking outing will live long in the memory, not for the 2-1 winning margin , but the way in which Chelsea dragged both themselves and their leader back for the abyss.

Fuel for Hazard speculation

Benched: Eden Hazard

If reports in certain quarters are to be believed, Eden Hazard is growing weary of life under Jose Mourinho.

The Special One’s decision to bench the Belgian for such a massive fixture will only add fuel to rumours he could be heading to Real Madrid in the summer.

But you could hardly blame Mourinho for making the call given Hazard’s largely anonymous previous outing as Liverpool ran out winners at Stamford Bridge on Saturday lunchtime.

The Chelsea manager has never been afraid to make big gambles in his career and dropping the No 10 was another brave show of defiance from a man on the brink.

He came off the bench late on but it was Willian who stole the show with his free-kick blockbuster to settle the match having also played a major role in the opening goal.

Mourinho still loved by the Bridge

Backing: Chelsea fans show their support for their manager

Mourinho has been under fire from almost every direction after Chelsea’s poor start to the campaign but the support of the majority of the Stamford Bridge faithful has not wavered.

Visiting supporters have enjoyed rolling out the ‘sacked in the morning chants’ in recent weeks but this has been countered by a blast of the Blues fans’ homage to their most successful ever boss.

Having delivered the club’s first league title in his first stint at the helm, and again lifting the Premier League last term, Mourinho can do no wrong in the eyes of many Chelsea followers.

For a club that has swapped managers almost as regularly as they have swapped shirts in recent times, there is a consensus among the crowd that a bit of stability and patience is required now.

‘Stand up for the Special One’ rang out in the closing stages and the Portuguese gave thanks for the backing with a salute to the stands.

Playing for the manager

Relieved: Jose Mourinho the manager of Chelsea looks on

Despite Hazard’s supposed unhappiness and rumours of a player revolt, denied of course by Cesc Fabregas , we’ve heard nothing but support from the boss for Chelsea’s players.

They been making all the right noises about playing for the manager but they haven’t been showing it on the pitch - until tonight.

The way Willian smashed home that late set-piece showed that nobody in a blue shirt was ready to give up in the face of adversity.

There was so much more grit and determination about Mourinho’s boys and they’ll need to recreate that spirit again at Stoke this weekend.

Willian up for the fight

Control: Chelsea's Brazilian midfielder Willian runs with the ball

Willian sent out a message to Pedro on his return to the Chelsea squad: I won’t give up my place without a fight.

It was his cross that forced Aleksandar Dragovic to turn into his own net for the opening goal and it wasn’t the first time on the night that he’d worked his way in behind the Dynamo Kiev defence.

The tricky Brazilian has genuine pace and silky skills that constantly bamboozled Vitorino Antunes and his deliveries into the box were only missing a body on the end of them.

Diego Costa too often found himself dragged into the left channel and his positioning meant a lack of targets for Willian to aim at in the final third of the pitch.

Pedro returned to the squad after a minor injury problem, taking his place in the dugout, but Mourinho won’t be in a hurry to re-instate him to the starting XI at the expense of Willian in this sort of mood.

His stunning free-kick was a fitting way to win the match , showing a cool head when the match was in danger of slipping away following Kiev’s leveller.
