Hi Tom, have you always been a rugby fan?
I didn’t love rugby when I was younger. My first experience of the game was when I was 9 years old and my friend invited me to go to a training session at Chinnor rugby club.
Did you enjoy the training session?
It was great fun and it really inspired me. The Wasps coachclasses are similar and are a great way get involved in the game. As well as making new friends, you get the chance to learn the key skills of the game.
Did the training sessions encourage you to keep playing rugby?
Yes, I moved to Henley Hawks club and played there for a few years. When I turned 16 I was offered a scholarship at a college in Bristol, so moved there to play and study.
When did you decide to play professionally?
After finishing my A-Levels I was offered a contract at Leicester Tigers and became part of their team for five years. Whilst there I missed by family a lot as they lived in London, so I moved to Wasps to be closer to them.
What’s the best thing about being part of the Wasps team?
The friendship bonds that we have as a team are great. The best thing about rugby is that it’s a team sport so you get to play with your friends. The team trains hard together, so it’s great to celebrate when we win matches but we’re also there to support each other through the tough times.
You’ve played rugby for England, was it exciting?
It was amazing, I felt so lucky to be chosen for the England squad and it doesn’t get much better than playing for your country all over the world. My ultimate goal is to play for England in the World Cup, it would be an honour to be chosen for the 2015 team.
