Ealing Trailfinders coach pinpoints way to win over Jersey Reds - and explains why little things mean a lot

Director of coaching Ben Ward says his troops have all the ingredients to be a force in rugby's second tier - but they need a bit more on top, he reckons

Pointing the way: Ben Ward

Coach Ben Ward believes Ealing Trailfinders have the tools to avoid a second flirt with Championship relegation - but admits what goes on between the ears of his squad will make all the difference.

The men from Vallis Way were three minutes away from a terrific win at Cornish Pirates last Sunday only to be pegged back by an indifferent call from the referee and a bit of dithering in defence.

It still ended a heartening 31-31 at the second longest trip of the season, but Ward feels that if a first win of the season is to follow at home to Jersey Reds tomorrow, niggling little mistakes need to be cut out.

Head to head: Trailfinders (R) get down with Pirates

Trailfinder line-outs in Cornwall were average to say the least, along with kicking after the restart and other bits and pieces.

Ealing Trailfinders denied at the death - but get off the mark against Cornish Pirates

"Little decisions from us as players make a big impact on the game," he said. "We've got to make sure we don't make errors at those silly moments.

"Three points is better than none at this stage - and it could have been none.

"We took our chances when they came, but we should have had a bit more patience as well.

"We need a bit of toughness in game management. It's a case of belief and getting used to winning. Once you start doing it, it becomes a pattern.

"We're not far away but in this league you don't get any weeks to learn. You have to produce straight away."

Jersey are two wins from two already, but Ward insists the Channel Islanders are capable of being shot down.

"There's a really good set up there; a good squad and Jersey are aiming for the top four.

"Yorkshire Carnegie and London Irish are the two favourites and out of reach of most teams. But we have the belief, and we're well prepared, but we've got to transform it to the pitches."

Forward Arthur Ellis will make his 50th Trailfinders appearance against Jersey.
