Grasshoppers will be hoping to be celebrating a cup double when their first XI face Old Actonians, following their second XI’s success over Rosslyn Park’s fourth team in the Middlesex Merit Cup.

Connor Gilmore was the hero of that game as he stepped up and nervelessly slotted the kick to put G’s ahead by 21 points to 20 and they would hold on to take the win.

Director of rugby Matt Gilmore has now called on the first XI to claim their side of the bragging rights on Saturday.

He said: “The banter has been very good. The boys are goading each other. If we can get that double, it’d be fantastic.

“The second team started it off and the first team boys are looking to cap it off.

“We’re pleased to be in the final. We tapered off in the last couple of months of the league season and finished fourth.

Trophy: Robert Coakley, Grasshoppers 2nd XV Captain and Bob Lawless of Middlesex Rugby

“We’re relishing this game on the Saturday.

“Actonians have just been promoted, so they will be a threat.

“They’re a bit unknown to us and I think they’ve made strides in the last couple of years. If we play well, we’d beat anybody in our league, so we have to play well.”

G’s will be relying on the brilliance of Louis Brown and their work at set-pieces to overcome their battling opponents.

Gilmore added: “Louis has had an outstanding season and the pick of our players. We’ve had a decent scrum and our line-out has been potent as well.”

There is free admission at London Wasps’ training ground at Twyford Avenue, with the match kicking off at 3pm.
