Chiswick RFC’s dreams of Twickenham were ended by Maidstone who claimed the London SE Intermediate Cup but promotion is still on the cards, writes Tom Moore.
The Dukes Meadow side were underdogs going into the contest but gave the Stones a scare, although they ultimately fell to a 29-12 defeat.
Sam Leslie-Miller and Jon Joyce scored tries for Chiswick, but Maidstone scored five of their own to secure victory.
Chiswick now have three games left to try and secure second spot in London SE 2 North West and a spot in the play-offs and face OMT at Dukes Meadow on Saturday.
Director of Rugby Adrian Hoile said: “We were beaten by the better team. They were a little bit better as a unit and they had their best side out, while we were missing some players.
“We are proud of what we have achieved in the cup and we want to play in more big games and win promotion. It is about securing second spot now.
“We believe we can be sustainable as a London One club. Were we to make it we would only be looking to stay up next year.”
