London Broncos travel to Cumbria on Sunday expecting a very different surface to play on than the 3G at Vallis Way.
The pitch at Workington Town was so waterlogged last week they were lucky their Rugby League Championship fixture against Halifax went ahead.
Broncos coach Andrew Henderson is expecting another mud bath and is preparing players accordingly. “We have to adapt our game plan and style of play,” he said. “We’re going to have to go there and tough it out, grind away and get a victory.”
Broncos suffered their first defeat of the season at Leigh on Sunday. With 18 minutes of the match remaining they were leading 20-12 but three converted tries in five minutes saw the home side to snatch a 24-20 victory.
Anderson said: “I was very disappointed we didn’t get anything out of the game.
"The players were very good at what they did. We defended extremely well for long periods and played some really good football at times. Over the course of the game, I felt we were the better of the two teams.
“But you’ve got to credit Leigh. They had an opportunity to step up the tempo, gain some momentum and they did. We probably had a 10/12 minute spell where we just couldn’t contain the Leigh pack and they punished us.”
Forward Alex Foster, who suffered a mild concussion in the game, is a doubt but Israel Eliab, the Papua New Guinea stand-off, arrived on Tuesday and could be available for selection.
Workington Town are still without a win and coach Phil Veivers is expecting another tough encounter. “Any time we play the Broncos it’s a tough game,” he said. “Against Leigh last week I thought they were pretty unfortunate not to get a victory. They’re travelling pretty well at the moment.”
Veivers is expecting his squad to be bolstered by the return of a host of injured players so the Broncos will have to be at their best to secure the win.
