Old Actonians 21-22 Grasshoppers
Grasshoppers completed a cup double as their first XV claimed the Middlesex Bowl with a hard fought win over Old Actonians.
It was end to end stuff in the first quarter as G’s played into a stiff breeze and it was Old A’s who broke the deadlock with a well taken penalty.
G’s drew level more or less straight away with a penalty from stand off, Conor Gilmore and then shortly after he pushed G’s into the lead with another penalty to make the score -3.
It was end to end stuff for the remainder of the half with neither team stretching ahead to any extent.
The next score though came from an inspired piece of magic from prop, Martin Crossan who gathered the ball in loose play and in one movement, flipped it through his legs to the backs, when full back Chris Roberts, went in the for unconverted try to make it 11-3 to G's.
The eventual half time score was 14-6 with a penalty added from both sides which included Conor Gilmore’s third.
All looked well for G’s in the second half as they played with the breeze behind them but as it turned out neither team used the elements particularly well. So the second half became a tense affair as each side defended and countered well.
It was the home side who scored first with an unconverted try to narrow the gap to three points. Then, almost straight away, Conor Gilmore stretched the lead back to six points with a penalty.
G’s were able to gain some territory and from a five metre lineout, Martin Crossan gathered from a tap down, drove on to allow room for number eight, Louis Brown to slip in for an unconverted try and stretch the lead to eleven points at 22-11.
Back came Old A’s though as they surged forward to get back in the game with an unconverted try to put the gap back to six and it could have been four but for the conversion hitting the upright.
Then as it looked like G’s would win out Old A’s got another try and needed the conversion to take the game but it sailed wide and G’s were able to run the clock down and the final score stayed at 22-21.
