Chiswick RFC 33-33 Old Merchant Taylors RFC
Chiswick, struggling with injuries, were pegged back to a draw by Old Merchant Taylors RFC to dent their promotion hopes.
Chiswick, playing with the breeze in their favour, opened the scoring when scrum half, Luca Vannini, spotted a small gap to beat the OMT’s defence within three minutes of the whistle. Gabs Lowe kicked the conversion.
Lowe used the wind to kick to the corners, pinning OMTs back, close to their try line. After eight minutes, Chiswick stole the ball with second row Jon Joyce making a break and providing the crucial pass to Josh Noble to score a second try.
A break close to the Chiswick line enabled OMT to open their account but the Dukes Meadow side hit back as Sam Leslie-Miller scored a sensational individual try.
With half time approaching, a missed tackle enabled OMTs to get beyond the Chiswick defensive cover and score a try close to the posts.
Chiswick started the second half in perfect style, when Mikhail Alhoa burst through a small gap to enable Jon Joyce to score to make it 26-12 and the two sides shared a try apiece to make it 33-19.
In the last quarter of the match and despite being two scores clear, Chiswick were unable to close the game out. Having created a three man overlap, the ball was snatched in the tackle from Chiswick and OMTs scored in the corner .
Chiswick appeared to control the final minutes of the match, with Vannini kicking into the corners of the OMTs half. But OMTs, being prepared to run the ball on every occasion, won the lineout and ran the ball back from fully 90 metres to score a fine injury time try to draw the game.
