London North West Two
Hammersmith & Fulham 8-17 Tabard
Might and muscle won the day to condemn Hammers to a third defeat in four games.
The Hurlingham Park side felt bullied on a mudbath of a pitch by the resurgent Herts club that only prolonged a poor start to the New Year.
Tabard’s huge pack and dire conditions made for a forward-dominated game with little spectacle.
Hammers’ head coach Dave Mannion explained: “There’s not much you can do when you come up against such a huge pack of forwards who are so dominant in the scrum.
“It wasn’t a day for our backs to shine, but I was very proud of the boys for the way they stuck at it in challenging circumstances and conditions.”
H&F were chasing the game at half-time thanks to a penalty try and a push-over score from the home side. Replacements in the front-row managed to sure up Hammers’ scrum and winger Joel Rabbidge – continuing his fine scoring record for the season – crossed the opposition line for a consolation try.
Full-back Neil McClure added three points with a penalty, but the damage had already been done and it was too late for Hammers to chase down the game.
Hammers Ladies also went down 5-14 to Old Albanians to round off a poor weekend for the club.
