Serena Williams served 16 aces on her way to an easy opening round victory on day two beating fellow American Anna Tatishvili 6-1, 6-2 in 61 minutes on Centre Court.

In total it was her 71st victory at Wimbledon in a career which has yielded five championships.

Perhaps surprisingly for a person so dominant on grass she found the surface quite slippery.

She said; "I kept falling today while I was getting my bearings. I love playing here at Wimbledon and it's a great honour for me to still be playing. She hits the ball very hard which I knew from the last time I played her."

Rafael Nadal finally laid last year's first round exit to rest when he won in four sets against Slovakia's Martin Klizan.

He did not look entirely at home on Centre Court and didn't play his best but came through 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.

Nadal said: "I am so happy for the victory. In the end the match was difficult. When you go on court and you lost last year in the first round and the year before in the second round - no I don't lie to you, sure it stays in your mind."

The seventh seed Jelena Jankovic, famous for winning the mixed doubles title with Jamie Murray, went out tamely to Estonia's Kaia Kanepi - who beat Laura Robson last year and has a good Wimbledon record - 6-3, 6-2.

There was less of a shock when Britain's last wild card Samantha Murray could match her namesake Andy, taking only one game from Maria Sharapova, a winner here 11 years ago.

However the score was slightly misleading as Murray kept Sharapova on court for 58 minutes.

Britain's other wild card Dan Smethurst lost 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 to America's big serving ninth seed John Isner.
