If you take the high road - chances are Sir Bradley Wiggins will zoom past after he was selected for England’s Commonwealth Games cycling squad this morning.

The Maida Vale Modfather heads north gambling on double participation in the Tour de France and the Games.

The Games time trial, which starts and ends at Glasgow Green, takes place on July 31, just four days after the Tour finishes.

At this stage, it looks unlikely Sir Brad will be on the Team Sky Tour team, but if he was to gain late selection, the 34-year-old is ready for a double shift.

Hero: Wiggins faces tough July

He said: “I haven't got a gold medal from the Commonwealths, so it would be nice to add that on, and it's a couple of days after the Tour so for the sake of carrying on for a few more days and doing it…"

He’s also likely to take on the road race in Glasgow scheduled for August 3.

The 2012 Tour de France champion first represented England at the Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur 1998, finishing fourth in the individual pursuit, and won a silver medal in the team pursuit, his first senior medal.

At the Commonwealth Games in Manchester four years later, he won silvers in the individual pursuit, and a second team pursuit.

Such is the strength of the 2014 England team, anything but gold for most will be a disappointment for Team England chef de mission Jan Paterson.

Rivals: Wiggins (L) and Chris Froome

She said: “This cycling team is undoubtedly the best we have ever seen selected for Team England.

“To have eight Olympic champions line up alongside previous Commonwealth Games medallists and some supremely talented younger athletes is genuinely exciting for us.”

The opening ceremony for the Commonwealth Games takes place on July 23 with events commencing on the following day.
