The club where Bradley Wiggins first saddled up is set to be saved from extinction.

Archer CC, named after the street in Westbourne Grove and close to the Maida Vale boyhood home of the 2012 Tour winner, was all but on its last legs.

Fewer than a dozen members, and some of them officials, remain from its halcyon days in the 70s when members were British champions.

It was the reason a 12-year-old Bradley sidled up to club chief Stuart Benstead and asked to join. His dad, Gary, had been an Archer rider while king of the continental six-date events.

By dint of circumstance, Benstead came across keen amateur cyclist Stewart Hadley who wants to revive the club and plans to field two Archer teams in new club kit for the Prudential 100 on August 10.

The ride will see 20,000 cyclists tackle a 100-mile route around the capital and Surrey finishing on The Mall.

It appears Hadley’s partner got a place but he didn’t, and then discovered teams could get places. He has entered two Archer teams of four each, and Benstead is delighted.

“Hopefully, the revival will attract new members,” he said.

Aiming higher: Archer chief Benstead

Increased traffic on West London roads decided decades ago the club move to the Hillingdon Cycle circuit that hosts various races during the year, with Benstead still in the vanguard of affairs including an event this evening (Monday).
