West London judo hopefuls Ashley McKenzie and Nekoda Davis could be just three fights from gold in Glasgow tomorrow following this morning’s draw.

Queens Park-born McKenzie, the top ranked competitor in the U60kg class at the games received a bye through to the quarter-finals where he will face either Scottish veteran John Buchanan or Pascal Laurent on Mauritius.

Neuso Sigauquehe, ranked 60 is the potential semi-final opponent former Celebrity Big Brother finalist, ranked 17 in the world, while Tom Pappas from Australia, Mckenzie’s biggest threat for gold lurks in the other half of the draw.

Davis, world ranked 46 is also spared a first round bout, so awaits the winner of the bout between Cynythia Rahming of the Bahamas and Kirsty Powell of Wales in the last eight.

Should she progress an all-British battle against Scotland’s Connie Ramsay, six places above her in the world rankings, is likely to stand between her and a shot a gold.

New Zealand’s Darcina Manuel is the overwhelming favourite for this class.
