Female weightlifters from Stars for the Future brought home three medals from a women-only Grand Prix in Germany

The club, which covers all west London boroughs, took five lifters overall to the tournament, although Harrow's Sorcha Gavin missed out as she is studying for exams.

Also in their entourage was Ealing's Kian Panjavi and Hillingdon's Nam Ahmidi, who helped out as assistant coach and referee respectively.

For Panjavi, it was a first experience of coaching in an international competition, having previously coached at the British School Championships.

And for Ahmadi, who is a level two coach and national technical official, it was a chance to referee his first international competition, having been helping British Weight Lifting in various guises for the past two years.

The competition itself saw 77 lifters from 19 different clubs go up against each other, and Stars for the Future's top performer was Hillingdon's Noorim Gulam, the club's very own British senior champion.

Gulam would have clinched a gold medal if she repeated the total she achieved in the British Seniors two weeks ago, but she dropped the 71kg jerk and lost first place to her Irish rival, who lifted the same weight but took god by virtue of being lighter.

Nasrin Karimi, from Ealing, shook off a bout of illness to land bronze in the masters level, and considering the circumstances, could not have done much better.

A second bronze went to Shila Panjavi, also from Ealing, who comfortably moved up a category higher to 63kg and lifted 64kg snatch and 84kg clean and jerk for 148kg overall, and then tried, but failed, to lift a new personal best of 66kg and 87kg.

Another Ealing lifter, 11 year old Tia Gayle from Ealing, confidently raised her personal best by 5kg with 34kg snatch and 45kg clean and jerk for 79kg overall, but just failed to take bronze.

The lifters also stayed close as a team by travelling together by car through France, Belgium and Germany, helped by a grant from the London Association to help with travel costs.
