WHO needs David Beckham when you've got Jamie Ward?

That's what fans of Bedfont Green will be thinking this week, after Ward eclipsed Beckham's famous goal from the half-way line against Wimbledon in 1996 with an even more spectacular winner for Green at Bridgewater on Tuesday night.

Just five minutes of Green's longest away trip of the season had gone when Ward produced his wonder goal.

Home keeper Tom Manley rushed out to the left touchline to clear downfield, but when the ball fell to the defender he struck his shot from fully 65 yards over everyone, including the hapless keeper, to send his team-mates and the travelling fans into raptures.

Even better for Green was the fact it proved to be the winner of a bad-tempered game both sides would finish with 10 men.

It earned a 1-0 Zamaretto League Division One S&W win on a long Tuesday trip to Somerset.

Bridgewater centre back Matt Pitcher's dangerous tackle on Gavin Hart set the tone, but unbelievably not even a yellow card was shown.

After Nat Pepperell headed against a post for the hosts, Green's Chris Henry was equally fortunate to escape punishment for a similarly late challenge.

However, the visitors were reduced to 10 when Billy Sentence was given first use of the soap for a high and dangerous tackle on the Robins' Jamie Price.

Facing the whole second half a man short, Green were indebted to keeper Gary Ross as he brilliantly clawed away a deflected shot which seemed destined to level the scores.

The Peacocks continued to defend heroically and their cause was helped when home skipper Chris Young joined Sentence in the bath for an off the ball kick on Phil Merritt.
