ANDRE Villas-Boas insists there is no crisis of confidence or major soul-searching about Chelsea's defensive capabilities after the five-goal hammering meted out by Arsenal.

The Portuguese boss hopes to turn things around quickly after successive Premier League defeats, but does not believe the team should worry about the 'freak' result at Stamford Bridge.

“Have I been thinking about changing the way we defend? No, not at all,” said Villas-Boas.

“There is always room for improvement and obviously we are not satisfied about conceding goals, but our most important task is to create more goalscoring opportunities than the opponent and to put them in the back of the net. If we do that, we are able to win most of the games.

“I think we have good, solid defensive organisation, it's competent and we have complete trust in it.

"We've always had solid organisation and it's not one game that ends 5-3 that is going to question our defensive organisation. Particularly when one is down to a player slipping and when another is down to you going on all-out attack for a draw.

The Chelsea boss added: “Defending is about collective organisation. It doesn't have anything to do with one or other individual.

"I think we went one step up in terms of our collective organisation against Genk, and we'll just have to continue to transfer that into the games.

“I live with these players on a daily basis and I'm fortunate enough to see what they can offer for me.”

Villas-Boas says he believes John Terry is in the right frame of mind to play at Blackburn on Saturday, in spite of the race allegations on his head.

“JT's our captain, he's one of the best defenders in the world and his talent is unquestionable,” he said, adding that confidence in general was intact at Cobham.

"“Our responsibility is to win every game, so when things don't go our way, we cannot be happy with the moment we are passing,” said Villas-Boas.

“What I would say is that this week that has past and these results that we have been getting doesn't [hurt] our confidence. There's good confidence in the group, there's good spirit. We are not questioning our quality or our talent.

“We understand that there's a momentum that we are passing by, which is negative and we want to get in the right track. If we can do it sooner, the better for us.

“We could have done it straight away against Genk because we had enough opportunities, but our focus remains on getting positive results as quickly as possible.”
