Ramsgate 2 Wealdstone 2

Sean Thomas's late penalty save earned Wealdstone a point on their travels at a blustery Southwood Stadium on Saturday.

The goalkeeper shuffled to his left before blocking the spot kick and smothering the ball as several Rams players homed in. Stones boss Gordon Bartlett deemed it a point gained, having watched his side recover from going behind and take the lead with a double from Davis Haule.

"In the first half I thought it was there for us to win but by the end of the second I was delighted to come away with a point," he said. "We had a couple of opportunities on the break but made the wrong decisions. They had the better of the second half territorially, but they got the deflected goal with 15 minutes left, which I always thought was coming. We were defending very well but with the sheer aerial bombardment we were taking you felt it was a case of how long we could hold on."

Bartlett says his side coped well in the windswept conditions and reckons the penalty award evened things out for the Rams after the referee had denied them a clear-cut goal minutes earlier.

"I thought we battled back really well, coped with the conditions and played some good football," he added.

"The wind certainly suited their style of play, which is very direct. The goal-keeper was taking free kicks in his own half and aiming them into our box and they did that very well.

"It was a perfectly good goal they scored towards the end and we can't figure out what foul the referee spotted. Darren [Locke] thought he got a whack on the back of the head and there was certainly no foul on Sean Thomas."

Justice was perhaps done when the referee awarded the hosts a penalty after Chris O'Leary hacked down a player.

"I don't think it was a penalty and when it was given I thought all our hard work was about to be undone. But Sean saved it - he has done very well for us."

James Gray was paired in attack with the recalled Haule in a bid to fight fire with fire against the Rams' imposing defence. Wealdstone's rearguard, however, was less than imposing, and was breached after just five minutes.

A long cross field ball picked out midfielder Ben Brown, who beat Lee Chappell before powering home a shot that went beyond the despairing dive of Thomas.

With Ryan Ashe starting to stamp his authority in the middle of the park the visitors found some rhythm and Gray almost levelled with a fierce strike that sailed just wide of the target.

Kieron Forbes' dazzling run deserved a better end product, but O'Leary headed straight into the palms of Turner as half time neared.

Their dominant spell did pay off, however, in the 35th minute. Heading away from goal Haule turned on a six-pence and sent a delightful lob over Turner.

Haule then put Stones ahead with a wonderful opportunist strike that put his side in the box seat at the interval.

Rams boss Jim Ward's dressing room dressing down had the desired effect on the second half: his side looked an entirely different prospect.

Penned in by driving gales, Stones' defence was battered by long balls into the box, but Thomas and his protective line were equal to the task.

Ryan Royston finally broke Stones' dogged resistance in the 74th minute with a long-range drive, before Haule blew a great chance to claim a hat-trick, blazing his shot over as the ball bobbled.

Rams had what they thought was their third goal of the afternoon chalked off by referee Phillip Knight for reasons only he knows, but the penalty award minutes later will have been a sweetener for the hosts. However, Thomas had other ideas and turned it into a sickener for the Rams. Wealdstone:Thomas, Martin, Chap-pell, Locke, Massey, Ashe,Forbes, O'Leary,Haule,Gray, Spendlove.
