Harrow & Wealdstone Swimming Club member Kevin Murphy has been given the honour of being named as Britain's newest inductee to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in Fort Lauderdale in Florida.

The Kenton resident is the only Brit from nine honorary inductees and his open water swimming CV is impressive.

Murphy, who has enjoyed a career that has spanned more than 40 years, was the first Briton and third male ever to complete the two-way, non-stop English Channel swim. He was the king of the Channel with the most crossings of 32 times in 2004.

In 1970, he was the second ever to complete the North Channel of the Irish Sea setting a record (11 hours 21 mins) lasting 18 years. He has swum in waters around Europe, Australia and North America.

Murphy, who is widely believed to be Harrow & Wealdstone's longest serving member since joining in 1960, will travel to Florida in September to be formally received into the Hall of Fame, where he will feature alongside other world class swimmers including four-time Olympic champion Inge De Bruin.
