HILLINGDON School of Gymnastics ignored the threat of closure hanging over them to send teams to represent Hillingdon in the London Youth Games for the 31st successive year.
A group of girls entered the artistic gymnastics and a team of boys took part in the floor and vault event despite their preparations being hit by interruptions to their training caused by that threat, as well as illness and injury.
Despite all that the girl's team of Emma Edwards, Amy Myers and young novices Eleanor Geraghty and Charlotte Hooker, worked well to finish 18th for the borough that wants to close their Swallows gym, making coaches Irina Kozyreva and Tania Swallow proud of their efforts.
Kendall Gibson, Douglas Strachan, Daniel Williams and Calum Strachan competed for the fourth year running and they produced a magnificent effort to improve one place on last year as they came fourth, with Gibson narrowly missing out on a medal on vault as he finished sixth, with Douglas Strachan close behind in eighth.
Gibson was also eighth on floor to match his overall position.
The club also entered teams for the borough of Ealing, which does not have a gymnastics facility.
Charlotte Newell, Charlotte Harrison, Ava Daruwalla and Adetoun Karunwi took them to eighth in the artistic competition while Shani Ross, Natasha Bishop and Becky Hylton helped Ealing, who were short of numbers, to 24th in the floor and vault.
