BLAIR Adams scored his first goal for Brentford in the first minute as Charlton were dumped out of the Johnstone's Paints Trophy tonight.

The Sunderland loanee, pushed up the left wing from his more familiar left back role, was in the right place to finish when Toumani Diagouraga went on a surging run through the centre of the Charlton defence, teeing up David Clarkson whose shot was pushed out by home keeper John Sullivan, Adams on hand to net the rebound.

The Bees were unfortunate not to go two goals up five minutes later when Diagouraga, at the centre of everything, saw a shot from the edge of the area blocked following a good Bees move.

And it was the Frenchman who was tripped in the area by Andy Hughes midway through the second half, Kevin O'Connor stepping up to smash a convincing spot kick home straight down the middle and past the helpless Sullivan.

Clarkson was then just beaten to a through ball by Sullivan, before Simon Moore made a superb save from a stinging Danny Green free kick down at the other end, and Myles Weston had a point-blank range diving header against one of his former clubs saved.

Diagouraga finally go the goal his performance deserved with half an hour left, showing good coolly from inside the Charlton area before picking his spot, ignoring a linesman flagging for offside to confidently celebrate with Bees boss Uwe Rosler, before the referee overruled his assistant to give the goal.

Clarkson went close to nabbing his first Bees goal soon after, while Bean, in his last game before linking up with the Jamaican national squad, headed just wide at full stretch from a Sam Wood cross following a good run by Craig Woodman.

Moore made another fine stop from Dale Stephens' cracking long range effort in the closing stages, while Weston again went clsoe with an effort from the right hand touchline and it was Brentford who went into the hat for the area quarter-final draw.

BEES: Moore, Thompson (Saunders), Eger, Llera, Woodman, Bean, O'Connor, Diagouraga, Adams (Wood), Weston, Clarkson (Grella). Subs not used: Lee, Spillane.
