The boys' U16 Burlington Danes Academy table tennis squad went one better than their female counterparts to win the regional final of the Jack Petchey Foundation London Schools Team competition.

Cacherel Mirjah, Yassin Seddik, Israel Awolaja, all aged 15, and Nathaniel Emmanue, 14, from the Shepherd's Bush school took the west London crown last week against eight other sides at Capital City Academy.

Meanwhile the girls team of Nour El-Zein, Yassmine Al-Amrie and Demi Chantereid, all aged 15, and Eman Buanan aged 14 were runners-up just fell short against the hosts in their final.

School coach Henry Medellin was proud of his team's success and said: “The teams have been playing together for about two years and they have a real passion for the sport.

“This is a good tournament, highly competitive and they get inspired to play even better.

"I would like to see them play in national competitions and become champions. It’s very popular with students at the school so there is an endless supply of talent coming through.”

The Burlington Danes Academy boys' team will now play in the London School’s Team finals in January at the Sports Dock at the University of East London.
