SAM Wood admitted he had mixed feelings after Brentford's heartbreaking Carling Cup exit at Birmingham City last night.

The former Bromley flyer fired the Bees ahead at St Andrews, only for Kevin Phillips to deny them a place in the quarter-finals with a stoppage-time leveller.

And the Premier League side held their nerve in the shootout to edge it 4-3.

Wood said: "It was great to get the goal on a personal note, and also for the travelling fans to give them something to celebrate.

"I wasn't expecting the ball to get to me to be honest. It bounced up a little bit, and I managed to adjust my feet and strike it cleanly.

"I don't score many so that's got to go down as the highlight of my career so far."

He added: "At the end of the day it's gone down to penalties, and it's anyone's game. Over the 90 minutes we were the better team, but it's a devastating way to lose a game."
