TONY Clubb believes London Broncos moving to Gillingham FC would not be the worst thing in the world.

Moving the club lock stock and barrel from The Stoop to Priestfield was presented as a fait accompli this week when it was let slip by a rugby league television presenter.

Gillingham, where Broncos played an 'on the road' game earlier this season, have since insisted that, although they are aiming to bring a rugby team on board, no deal has yet been done.

Other options mooted for the Broncos are moving back to Brentford, where they played a few years back; to Leyton Orient, where they played their other 'on the road' game this season; and staying put at The Stoop.

However, it would seem Gillingham would be an unpopular move with supporters, who flooded fans' forums this week saying this would be their last season if it went ahead.

But Broncos centre Clubb, a Kent lad himself having joined the club as a youngster from Greenwich Admirals, reckons it is worth a shot.

He said: “It would be a good move personally as I have family in Kent and I've just had a young girl, but would the fans take to it? That remains to be seen.

“However, we played at Charlton before a few seasons back, and it went really well when we played at Gillingham earlier in the season – it was one of our biggest crowds of the season.

“I'm sure there will be some fans who are pretty upset, but sometimes you just have to go with it and try something new.”

The move somewhat overshadowed a huge week for the club, which started with a 62-18 hammering of Challenge Cup finalists Warrington Wolves, followed by the announcement of interim head coach Tony Rea signing a two-year contract.

But Clubb also saved a thought for Rob Powell, who was removed as head coach last month and moved to the backroom staff, but who announced his departure from the club this week.

Clubb said: “I have a lot of time for Rob as I've been with him for six years in the academy and then first team, and I was hoping he would come back to the club, but you have to crack on. He is still a good coach, and I'm sure he will get another job in the Super League or National Leagues.

“There is a real buzz about the place now after beating Warrington. They may have had a weakened side due to the cup final, but it was still a side packed full of internationals.

“It's frustrating we couldn't do this earlier in the season with the same squad, but if we finish the year on a positive note it will keep the confidence flowing through the close-season and into the next one.”
